As before, I’ve done most of my writing for the OptinMonster blog, covering content marketing, email marketing, lead generation, analytics, mobile and social media. I’ve also written quite a few OptinMonster tutorials. Here’s the list. Hope you find something useful to add to your reading list:

That aside, I’ve participated in a few expert roundups and have been cited on a couple of sites. Here’s the list:

Want to find out what I’ve been up to personally? I’ve shared that in my newsletter.

Enjoy the holidays, and see you next year!

P.S. I’m still taking on a limited number of freelance projects. If you’d like me to provide content like this for you, check out my writing services page to see what’s on offer, then contact me for a customized quote.

A while back I did an interview about blogging with Brent Jones for Brent Jones Online. That site’s now offline, as Brent has made the transition to being an author. That means I get to share the video with you here.

check-your-facts-with-sharon-hurley-hall

Key takeaways from the video:

  • Check that facts have been cited in multiple trustworthy locations. Aim for 99.9% plausibility as 100% is hard to achieve.
  • If you’re positioning yourself as an expert content writer, verifying facts adds to your credibility.
  • Use reliable sources that keep their information up to date.

And here’s one quote:

If you want to say something is absolutely awesome, you don’t need to research anything. But if you want to say “this is awesome and here’s why”, then you’d better have reliable facts to back it up.

Enjoy!

Online content is almost universally recognized as a crucial part of any company’s marketing strategy. While it’s clear that content is indeed king in this sphere, what’s less evident is just how businesses can best use content to achieve their goals. ROI for content marketing is notoriously difficult to measure and understand. This type of campaign is best approached as a long-term effort, but some companies don’t have the patience or understanding to wait out the interim and reap the rewards of the long view.

More than half of marketing agencies believe that their clients know nothing about creating content campaigns and a third feel that their biggest challenge is understanding and meeting clients’ expectations. Don’t fall into this difficult majority. Set yourself up for success by diving into the numbers and getting a better view of how content marketing works. This informed insider view of the online marketing industry will give you the edge you need to make a real impact with your internet postings.

Once you have an understanding of what you’re doing with content marketing, you have almost unlimited potential to connect with your audience. Eighty-three percent of device users around the globe use multiple screens. These consumers are almost constantly connected, using an average of five devices and 10 services. Meet your target audience where they’re at and push your marketing to a new level with a smarter approach to content. Check out the infographic below for valuable insights from CopyPress about the content marketing landscape.

This year, I thought I’d do something a bit different and look back on some stats for my writing work in 2016:

Writing and Sharing

2016 in review - sharon hurley hall

I don’t take the share counts too seriously, as every platform reports them slightly differently, but it’s nice to know that people are sharing.

Site Traffic

In other news, via Google Analytics:

  • I had fewer site visitors this year (around 7,500 uniques), but those who came bounced less and stuck around longer (a 42% increase over last year), which is great news.
  • The vast majority of my visitors (47%) are in the US, with some from the UK and India.
  • People are finding me through search, which is good news in terms of my SEO efforts. And there are quite a few direct visitors too.
  • Twitter remains the top way people find my content, with Facebook second. Despite being more active on LinkedIn, it’s not as effective for content sharing (in this case, at least).
  • Top pages on the site are:

Writing Projects

Interesting projects this year included:

  • A bunch of in-depth guides on CrazyEgg
  • A couple of ghostwritten ebooks on WordPress
  • A marketing guide for startups
  • Teaser copy for a translation company
  • Consulting with a client on WordPress, SEO and social media marketing
  • Delivering a presentation on content marketing

Next year’s plan includes:

What’s on your agenda for 2017?

Happy holidays to all.

Most of the articles have appeared on Crazy Egg, though there have been a few on other sites. And, of course, there are lots of other ghostwritten articles I can’t claim credit for.
So here’s almost everything I’ve written about analytics in the hope that you will get some insight into how to use it effectively for your own business.
